Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-19

The Story

The tape shows a risk-on rotation in single names against a defensive index options backdrop. AMZN +4.90%, PLTR +4.37%, and TSLA +4.12% led, while value, financials, and health care drifted lower. Yesterday's bullish call bets paid off broadly — MSFT, NVDA, INTC, TSLA all rose — while the top bearish put bets mostly failed (7 of 10 wrong or flat). Today's shift is index-level put buying: SPY $78.8M, QQQ $95.0M, and IWM $33.6M in unusual puts even as the indexes closed higher. The strongest single-name setups are the TRO-confirmed bullish calls in COST and MSFT, against a persistent IWM put wall at 257–259.

Bearish Bets to Watch

UNH (score 59) — $6.0M in unusual puts, dominated by $4.38M at the 400 strike (Nov 20), with spot at $406.92 and +1.36% today. The 398/Oct-30 line traded 61.9x V/OI. No TRO confirmation, and yesterday's UNH put bet was wrong (+1.36%).

IWM (score 56, TRO ✅) — $33.6M in puts is the largest single-name bearish stack, with $10.69M at 258 and $9.30M at 257 (both Nov 20, 5.3% and 4.9% OTM). Put flow has been persistent for two months; today's 22 contracts at 221x V/OI confirms the down-theory even as IWM closed +0.34%. The 257–259 band is the line to hold.

META (score 57) — $1.3M puts but extreme V/OI: 202x on the 705/Oct-28 and 161x on the 700/Oct-28. Spot at $704.99 (-0.62%) sits right at those strikes. Two-sided name — $23.1M in unusual calls sits on the other side, so treat this as a pin/hedge rather than a clean short.

AAPL (score 53) — $4.8M in puts, anchored by $2.68M at the 340/Oct-30 strike (+0.9% OTM) with spot at $342.99 and -0.12%. No TRO, and yesterday's AAPL put bet was flat.

NVDA (score 49) — $13.0M in puts, all clustered at 218–238 Oct-28 strikes, but $26.1M in unusual calls on the other side (including 1657x V/OI at the 202/Oct-28). Spot +1.38% today; this is a two-sided gamma name, not a directional bet.

Bullish Bets to Watch

COST (score 53, TRO ✅) — $1.9M in calls with 92.5x V/OI at the 990/Nov-27 and 64.3x at 995, both near spot $995.75 (+0.65%, at 64-day highs). TRO confirmed and trend up across daily, weekly, and monthly.

MSFT (score 49, TRO ✅) — $4.1M in calls, led by $1.77M at the 460/Nov-6 and $0.87M at 490/Nov-27 (34.4x V/OI). Yesterday's MSFT call bet was right (+0.88%), and spot $533.64 is +33.8% over 65 days.

AMZN (score 46, TRO ✅) — $8.2M in calls and the biggest spot move on the board at +4.90% to $262.50. TRO confirmed; call flow stepped up from $3.2M yesterday to $8.2M today, matching the breakout.

SPY (score 46, TRO ✅) — $29.9M in calls across 16 strikes, but this is paired with $78.8M in puts — a hedged long, not pure upside conviction.

IWM (score 54) — $7.7M in calls at 490x V/OI, but against $33.6M in puts. The call stack is smaller and shorter-dated; the put wall at 257–259 is the dominant position.

The Oracle Read

The tape is long single-name momentum (AMZN, TSLA, MSFT, COST) and short/h‎edged at the index level (SPY, QQQ, IWM puts). The strongest follow-through setups are COST and MSFT — TRO confirmed, in-trend, with real notional. Watch IWM 257–259 as the broad-market tell: if those puts keep building while small caps stall, the index hedges are the smart side of the trade.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • AMZN — long, +4.90% breakout to $262.50, TRO-confirmed calls; watch follow-through.
  • TSLA — long, +4.12% to $367.80 with $3.9M/$3.8M calls at 370 and 360 (Oct 30).
  • IWM — short trigger, put wall at 257–259 (Nov 20); a break below 257 confirms the put thesis.
  • UNH — short setup, $4.38M put at 400 (Nov 20); watch 400–406 zone.
  • NVDA — two-sided, 1657x V/OI call at 202 (Oct 28) vs $13M puts at 218–238; open direction decides.

Total unusual put notional: $99.5M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
