Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-21
The Story
Megacap tech and semis led while telecom and staples lagged: META +7.03% to $742.05, AMD +3.64%, TSLA +3.48%, NVDA +2.74% against T -6.59% and GOOGL -1.57%. Total unusual put notional was $142.6M, concentrated in Communication Services ($57.1M) and Technology ($51.9M), and all three index ETFs read defensive (SPY PCR_v 1.42, QQQ 1.37, IWM 3.40). Yesterday's bearish bets mostly lost — META, TSLA, NVDA, QQQ all rose — while yesterday's bullish calls on META, TSLA, AAPL, AVGO, and QQQ paid. The big shift today is META: after a +7% pop it is the most contested name on the board, with $35.6M in puts and $27.9M in calls. The tape is selling that pop.
Bearish Bets to Watch
META (score 57) — $35.6M puts across 36 contracts, 80x V/OI, 6-strike cluster, up from $3.9M yesterday. The anchor is the 700 Nov-20 put: $19.33M notional, 5.7% OTM, plus $3.67M on the 698 at 34.7x V/OI. Yesterday's bearish bet lost (+7.03%); today the put flow scaled nine-fold, fading the move to $742.05.
GOOGL (score 56, TRO ✅) — $12.6M puts, 275x V/OI, 3-strike cluster. $10.33M sits on the 335 Nov-20 put (0.1% ITM), with the 352 Nov-6 put at 37x. Spot fell -1.57% today, TRO confirms the bearish read, and sibling GOOG fell -1.59%.
TSLA (score 54) — $12.1M puts across 36 contracts, 81x, 4-strike cluster. Key prints: 402 Oct-30 put $1.37M at 52.2x and 388 Oct-30 $1.33M at 42.2x. Spot rose +3.48% to $387.54 and yesterday's puts were wrong, so this flow is fading the rally.
IBM (score 52) — $5.7M puts, 102x V/OI, 3-strike cluster, up from $0.3M yesterday. $2.42M on the 250 Nov-20 put (0.5% OTM), plus the 250 Nov-13 at 101.5x. Spot is +3.88% today and +18.84% over 66 days — these puts are counter-trend.
QQQ / SPY (scores 45 / 38) — index hedging, not single-name conviction. QQQ $70.5M puts at 185x with $24.3M on the 723 Nov-20 put (0.3% OTM) and SPY $33.7M with $8.3M on the 735 Dec-31 put. Both read defensive alongside a rising tape.
Bullish Bets to Watch
META (score 67) — $27.9M calls, 69x V/OI, 6-strike cluster, the highest bullish conviction score on the board. The 700 Nov-27 call ($7.4M, 37.4x) and 702 Nov-20 ($4.5M, 42.4x) sit right at the money. The stock already delivered +7.03%; this call flow is betting it holds, directly against the put wall.
MSFT (score 57, TRO ✅) — $21.9M calls, 173x V/OI, 4-strike cluster, up from $3.3M yesterday. The anchor is the 535 Jan-2027 call at $14.19M (0.4% OTM), plus the 530 Nov-2 at 172.7x. Spot was flat at +0.15% today after a +33.61% 67-day run; TRO confirms the bullish read.
GOOGL (score 59) — $30.5M calls, 51x, 3-strike cluster. $9.5M on the 352 Oct-30 call at 50.7x (5.3% OTM) and $10.5M on the 330 Nov-20. This sits against a TRO-confirmed bearish setup and a -1.57% spot move — the calls are the wrong side today.
NFLX (score 51) — $11.5M calls across 33 contracts, 440x V/OI, after a -7.46% drop yesterday. Biggest print: 66 Nov-20 call at 439.6x ($0.43M), with $1.80M on the 65 Dec-18. Spot recovered +0.68% — dip-buying flow.
IWM (score 51) — $4.9M calls, 20x V/OI, 5-strike cluster, concentrated at the 276-277 money line. Spot +0.08% today but -6.73% over 66 days, so this is a small-cap bounce attempt against a downtrend.
The Oracle Read
The index tape is defensive (all three ETFs elevated PCR) while conviction capital chases single-name megacaps. META is the strongest signal — the $35.6M put wall against $27.9M calls after a +7% pop means smart money is selling the move. GOOGL is the cleanest short (TRO-confirmed, spot already falling), and MSFT is the cleanest long (TRO-confirmed, $14.19M Jan-2027 call).
Names to Watch at the Open
- META — the $742 level decides it; $19.33M of Nov-20 700 puts vs $27.9M in calls.
- GOOGL — short bias, $335 Nov-20 put anchor, TRO confirmed, spot -1.57%.
- TSLA — fading the +3.48% pop; 402 Oct-30 put at 52.2x is the trigger.
- IBM — counter-trend $5.7M put cluster vs +3.88% momentum; watch $250.
- MSFT — long bias, $535 Jan-2027 call at $14.19M, TRO confirmed.

Total unusual put notional: $142.6M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
