Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-23
The Story
Risk-off tape: SPY fell 0.51% to $760.10, 65 names showed unusual put activity totaling $66.1M, and every sector except Materials and Utilities flagged caution. Yesterday's puts validated — 6 of 10 bearish conviction bets paid off (MRK, V, TSLA, SPY, JNJ, META), while only 2 of 10 bullish bets did (TXN, MSFT). Today's shift is index-level protection: $35.8M SPY puts and $42.7M QQQ puts, with IWM printing a 4.96 put/call ratio. Energy and defense bucked the tape (COP +3.54%, CVX +2.93%, XOM +2.82%, LMT +2.46%). TSLA is the battleground — the largest bullish notional at $33.9M calls against $10.6M puts.
Bearish Bets to Watch
SPY (score 49) — $35.8M unusual puts across 37 contracts, 76x max V/OI, spot $760.10. Biggest print is 41,708 contracts on the 722 Nov-20 put for $16.8M, 5.0% OTM, with $7.0M more at 724. No TRO confirmation; yesterday's SPY put was right (-0.51%).
QQQ (score 45) — $42.7M unusual puts across 55 contracts, spot $705.42. Dominated by a single 3,003-lot 775 Nov-6 put for $21.1M, 9.9% in-the-money. No TRO confirmation, and the same name carries $107.0M of unusual calls — a two-sided tape around 710.
IWM (score 38) — $12.3M puts with 133x V/OI and the most defensive index PCR_v at 4.96. The 310 Dec-18 put printed $7.7M, 12.4% in-the-money. TRO confirmed ✅; spot $275.85, down only 0.24% today.
AAPL (score 43) — $4.2M puts across 16 contracts, 48x V/OI, spot $347.69 (-0.19%). Puts cluster near-the-money at 348/340, with a 17.5x print on the 350 Nov-4. No TRO on the put side, but AAPL's $8.7M call flow is TRO-confirmed ✅ — the name is split.
MA (score 43) — $1.2M puts across 6 contracts, 28x V/OI, spot $623.38 (-1.50% after +1.65% yesterday). Puts sit at 615 (25.2x) and 610 (28.0x), 1.3% and 2.1% OTM. No TRO confirmation.
Bullish Bets to Watch
TSLA (score 54) — $33.9M unusual calls, 23x V/OI, spot $372.21. The 375 strike dominates with $7.2M (Nov-27) and $6.5M (Nov-6) prints, 0.7% OTM. But TSLA also shows $10.6M puts (score 42), and yesterday's TSLA put was right (-0.66%) — both sides are loaded.
GE (score 48) — $15.1M unusual calls, led by 10,432 contracts on the 300 Jan-15-2027 strike for $12.8M, 5.0% OTM. Spot $285.63, -2.74% today and -16.37% over the 68-day window, so this is a bet on a rebound from a downtrend. No TRO confirmation.
META (score 51) — $8.2M unusual calls, 36x V/OI, spot $642.24. Key print is the 645 Nov-20 for $4.1M, 0.4% OTM. META fell 12.84% yesterday and 0.70% today; yesterday's META call was wrong and today's put was right, so the call flow is fighting the tape with no TRO.
IWM (score 50) — $4.1M unusual calls, 332x V/OI, with $1.35M on the 280 Nov-5 (1.5% OTM). This conflicts with the index's defensive 4.96 PCR_v and TRO-confirmed put side — small-caps are being bet both ways.
QQQ (score 39) — $107.0M unusual calls, 152x V/OI, the largest single bullish notional on the tape. Near-the-money flow: 715 Nov-20 for $12.2M and 710 Nov-30 for $11.0M. No TRO, against $42.7M of puts — 710 is the pivot.
The Oracle Read
The tape is buying index protection while energy and defense break higher, with TRO confirmation on XOM calls. TSLA is the strongest single-name signal — size on both sides with a slight bullish tilt above 370. Watch SPY 722 and QQQ 775 as the downside lines; a close below SPY 760 or QQQ 705 would validate the put wall.
Names to Watch at the Open
- SPY — downside: 722 Nov-20 put wall ($16.8M); 760 is the line to hold.
- QQQ — two-sided: 775 Nov-6 put ($21.1M) vs 710/715 calls; 710 is the pivot.
- TSLA — both ways: $33.9M calls vs $10.6M puts around 370/375.
- GE — upside: 300 Jan-15-2027 calls ($12.8M); needs to reclaim 285.63.
- XOM/LMT — upside: +2.82% and +2.46% today, XOM calls TRO-confirmed ✅.

Total unusual put notional: $66.1M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
