Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-22
The Story
Risk-off session: QQQ -3.00% and SPY -1.19%, dragged by META -12.84%, INTC -9.25%, AMD -8.24%, and NVDA -4.52%. Money rotated into defensives — WMT +2.90%, JNJ +3.92%, PG +5.59%, LMT +6.92%, ACN +7.68%, and telecoms (VZ +3.72%, T +3.90%). Yesterday's bearish bets were right almost across the board (META, GOOGL, TSLA, QQQ, SPY, AMZN, AMD all fell), while yesterday's bullish calls were almost all wrong. Today the tape is two-way: QQQ shows $235.6M unusual puts against $278.9M unusual calls, and total unusual put notional jumped to $275.0M. The shift is conviction put flow in MRK, V, ORCL, and NVDA against conviction call flow in TXN, WMT, and AMZN.
Bearish Bets to Watch
MRK (score 64) — $2.8M puts across 10 contracts, max 392x V/OI. The 146 strike 11/20 put carries $1.53M at 391.6x V/OI with spot at $147.19 (-1.80% today). No TRO confirmation; note MRK also has bullish TRO ✅ and $5.3M in unusual calls at 221x, so this is a two-sided tape with puts slightly heavier at the money.
V (score 59) — $2.2M puts, max 45x. The 415 strike 11/20 put is $1.03M at 45.0x, right at spot $414.28 after a +1.58% up day to a 52-week high. No TRO confirmation; the bet is against the breakout.
ORCL (score 52, TRO ✅) — $6.0M puts, max 27x. The 124 strike 11/6 put is $2.45M at 12.6x, spot $125.04 (-3.14% today). TRO is confirmed with D/W/M all pointing down; the put flow follows the falling trend.
NVDA (score 46) — $50.4M puts, max 130x. The 240/238/242 strikes for 10/30 are far OTM (-13.1% to -14.2%): $17.4M, $8.9M, and $6.2M. Spot $212.27 (-4.52% today); the bet is on continued downside below $212.
QQQ (score 43) — $236.1M puts across an 11-strike cluster, max 233x. The 760 strike 10/30 put is $52.5M (-8.0% OTM) and the 693 strike 11/6 put is $22.1M at 119.7x. Index defensive; pairs with SPY's $75.0M put flow.
Bullish Bets to Watch
TXN (score 66) — $3.2M calls, max 132x. The 288 strike 11/20 call is $1.42M at 130.3x with spot $279.66 (-1.77% today). No TRO confirmation; D/W trend down, M up — the top conviction bull print.
WMT (score 64, TRO ✅) — $12.1M calls, max 92x. The 121 strike 11/13 call is $2.43M at 28.2x and the 124 strike 11/20 call is $1.25M at 92.3x; spot $121.14 (+2.90% today). TRO confirmed with D/W/M all up — the cleanest bull setup on the tape.
AMZN (score 55, TRO ✅) — $9.4M calls, max 115x. The 268 strike 10/30 call is $3.49M at 20.7x and the 282 strike 10/30 call is $1.02M at 21.3x; spot $250.39 (-4.92% today). TRO confirmed but the calls are contrarian — buying the dip into a down day.
SPY (score 55) — $68.0M calls, max 943x. The 763 strike 11/2 call is $2.59M at 943.3x; 762/763 strikes cluster near spot $764.02. Bullish flow sits right at the money against the -1.19% down day.
QQQ (score 54) — $278.9M calls across a 12-strike cluster, max 128x. The 725 strike 12/31 call is $78.3M at 32.1x — a year-end bullish position that out-notionals every put print.
The Oracle Read
Strongest bear setups are ORCL (TRO confirmed, trend down) and NVDA ($50.4M at far-OTM strikes). Strongest bull setups are WMT (TRO confirmed, D/W/M up) and TXN (highest conviction score). The index tape is two-way but the put side is heavier on a down day — expect continued pressure in megacap tech (META, NVDA, AMD) alongside continued strength in defensives (WMT, JNJ, PG, LMT).

Total unusual put notional: $275.0M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
