Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-27

The Story

Markets bounced: SPY +0.57% to 769.58, QQQ +1.17% to 720.77, IWM +1.22% to 280.17. Yesterday's bullish conviction bets were right 7 of 10 — AVGO +3.51%, ORCL +3.62%, TSLA +4.04%, QQQ +1.17% — while bearish bets were right only 2 of 9 (WMT, NFLX). Today's shift is fresh put money into AMD ($4.3M→$15.7M) and TSLA ($27.2M→$31.8M) even as both rallied. Call money exploded into FDX ($0.2M→$6.7M) and BKNG ($0.1M→$22.5M). BA broke down -10.67% to 168.06 with TRO-confirmed $34.2M in puts.

Bearish Bets to Watch

SPY (score 56) — index top hedge, $31.3M puts across 43 contracts, down from $70.3M yesterday. Key print: 767 put 11/04, 318.2x V/OI, $6.92M, +0.3% OTM. No TRO confirmation; multi-day trend is +2.75% over 71 days, so the hedge is shrinking as the tape holds up.

AMD (score 52) — $15.7M puts across 34 contracts, up from $4.3M yesterday. Cluster at 535/540/545 11/06 ($3.38M, $3.73M, $3.69M) is betting the +5.62% move to 560.13 stalls before expiry. No TRO confirmation; spot has whipsawed across a 424.68–649.53 range all quarter.

TSLA (score 49) — $31.8M puts, max V/OI 879x, 4-strike cluster near the money. Key print: 410 put 11/20, $7.44M, -0.6%. Spot +4.04% to 407.51; yesterday's TSLA put bet was wrong (+4.04%), so today they are doubling into the same trade.

NVDA (score 52) — $5.3M puts, down from $12.5M yesterday. Key print: 230 put 11/04, 321.5x V/OI, $0.80M, -5.7% OTM. No TRO confirmation; spot +0.69% to 217.68 and 71-day trend is +5.63%.

BA (score 33) — the one TRO-confirmed breakdown, -10.67% to 168.06. $34.2M puts at 195x, concentrated at 170 11/20 ($6.0M) and 155 1/15 ($4.1M). Highest conviction bearish trade in the tape today.

Bullish Bets to Watch

FDX (score 72) — highest bullish score, $6.7M calls vs $0.2M yesterday. Key print: 315 call 11/06, 324.8x V/OI, $5.63M, +2.5% OTM into an earnings window. Spot +2.17% to 307.18; no TRO yet.

BKNG (score 62) — $22.5M calls vs $0.1M yesterday, 101x V/OI. Key print: 154 call 1/15/27, 100.8x V/OI, $22.23M, +2.6% OTM — a single far-dated leap bet. Spot -1.95% to 150.13, so this is buying the dip into January.

GOOGL (score 57) — $52.9M calls, up from $5.1M yesterday. Key print: 360 call 1/15/27, $37.92M, +12.3% OTM. Spot +0.92% to 320.60; yesterday's GOOGL call bet was right.

META (score 59) — $16.6M calls at 110x, 4-strike cluster above spot. Key print: 630 call 11/06, 58.2x V/OI, $1.75M, +1.7% OTM. Spot -1.73% to 619.65, so this is betting the pullback reverses by expiry.

MSFT (score 60) — $6.6M calls, down from $58.4M yesterday. Key print: 475 call 12/04, 108x V/OI, $1.31M, deep ITM at -10.6%. Yesterday's $58.4M call bet was flat; today's smaller tape still carries conviction score 60.

The Oracle Read

FDX and BKNG are the strongest setups — call notional jumped 10–30x in one session with 100x+ V/OI, the cleanest signal in the data. AMD and TSLA puts against a rallying tape look like top-ticking until TRO confirms, especially with both still up on the day. Index hedges eased sharply (SPY $70.3M→$31.3M, QQQ $68.7M→$18.7M) while IWM stayed defensive at PCR_v 2.32, so small caps are the caution zone.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • BA — short/avoid, 168.06, TRO-confirmed puts at 170 and 155.
  • FDX — long, 315 call 11/06 ($5.63M, 324.8x), spot 307.18.
  • AMD — fade the puts, spot 560.13, $15.7M put cluster at 535–545 11/06.
  • TSLA — stall risk at 407.51, $7.44M put at 410 11/20.
  • IWM — caution, PCR_v 2.32, $8.8M put at 266 11/20 despite +1.22% close.

Total unusual put notional: $139.9M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
