Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-20
The Story
Broad rally led by small caps and health care: SPY +0.51%, QQQ +0.42%, IWM +1.72%, with UNH +3.08%, LLY +3.57%, MRK +3.24%, BMY +4.88%, and SMCI +12.22%. The index tape is still defensive despite the gains — PCR_v sits at 1.73 (SPY), 1.72 (QQQ), and 1.94 (IWM), so put buyers are hedging into strength. Yesterday's conviction bets split: bearish META, AAPL, and AMD paid, but bearish UNH, IWM, TSLA, and SPY were wrong as those names rose. The big shift is at UNH, where $2.3M of Oct-30 puts at 408–415 are piling in even as the stock makes a 3-month high. IWM is now the most two-sided name on the board: $25.8M of puts against $15.0M of calls.
Bearish Bets to Watch
UNH (score 62) — put buyers fading the health-care rally. $2.3M across 8 contracts, clustered at the 415/412/410/408 Oct-30 strikes (24.4x, 20.9x, 17.8x, 32x V/OI), with spot at $419.47 after +3.08%. No TRO confirmation, and yesterday's UNH bearish bet (score 59, $6.0M) was wrong — the stock rose +3.08%. This is a repeat fade that keeps losing money so far.
TSLA (score 50) — $26.6M across 23 contracts, anchored by $17.9M of 375 Nov-20 puts at 3.9x V/OI (ATM, spot $374.52). TRO confirmed ✅, but the stock rose +1.83% today and yesterday's TSLA put bet (score 43, $5.1M) was wrong. The 368 Oct-30 put ($2.29M, 6.8x) adds a near-dated leg.
META (score 47) — $3.9M across 14 contracts, with the 690 Oct-28 put at 180x V/OI and the 680 Oct-28 put at 21.9x. Spot fell -1.66% to $693.29, and yesterday's META bearish bet (score 57, $1.3M) was right. Put notional is small but the cluster sits right at spot into Friday expiry.
LLY (score 43) — $9.0M across 49 contracts, 6-strike cluster, but spot is at $1284.90 after +3.57% and near its 66-day high. The 1305 Nov-13 put (69x V/OI) and 1105 Nov-13 put (58.9x, $0.42M) are the standout prints. No TRO confirmation — this is a wide, deep fade against an uptrend.
IWM (score 42) — $25.8M across 20 contracts, dominated by the 261 Nov-20 put ($11.53M, 2.5x) and 258 Nov-20 put ($7.28M, 1.5x). TRO confirmed ✅, but small caps just rallied +1.72% and yesterday's IWM bearish bet (score 56, $33.6M) was wrong. The 258/261 zone is the line in the sand.
Bullish Bets to Watch
IWM (score 53) — $15.0M across 6 strikes, 192x V/OI, led by the 275 Oct-30 call ($3.5M) and 278/279 Nov-20 calls. Yesterday's IWM bullish bet (score 54, $7.7M) was right (+1.72%). This is the other side of the 258/261 put wall — a long/short fight between 258 and 278.
SPY (score 53) — $10.9M across 27 contracts, 9 strikes clustered 768–780, led by the 780 Nov-13 call ($3.05M). TRO confirmed ✅ and yesterday's SPY call bet (score 46, $29.9M) was right (+0.51%). Calls are leaning into the breakout while the ETF's own put buyers hedge it.
AVGO (score 48) — $6.2M across 15 contracts, 3-strike cluster at 335–340, led by the 335 Oct-30 call ($0.93M, 5.0x) and 340 Nov-13 call ($0.84M). Spot $335.16, flat today after +1.81% yesterday. The 285 Oct-28 call (32.5x, $0.66M) is a deep ITM position, not a fresh bet.
MSFT (score 48) — $3.3M across 7 contracts, deep ITM calls at 490/480/465/455 (34.4x, 24x, 2.1x V/OI), all -7.9% to -14.5% OTM. TRO confirmed ✅, but spot is -0.30% to $532.02 and yesterday's MSFT call bet (score 49, $4.1M) was flat. These read as stock-replacement longs, not directional lever.
COST (score 43) — $3.6M across 10 contracts, 46x V/OI, TRO confirmed ✅. Spot $994.33, flat after a steady climb to $995.75. Low-conviction accumulation, no single dominant strike.
The Oracle Read
The tape is hedging a rally rather than chasing it — every index ETF carries a PCR_v above 1.7 even as stocks grind higher, which reads as protective, not panicked. The strongest directional signal is the UNH 408–415 Oct-30 put cluster fading a +3.08% healthcare breakout, and it has no TRO confirmation yet. The IWM 258/261 put wall against the 275/278 call cluster is the cleanest two-sided range to trade: momentum favors the top, notional favors the bottom.
Names to Watch at the Open
- UNH — short bias, hold above $415 and the Oct-30 put buyers (408–415 cluster) lose again.
- TSLA — short bias, $375 is the pivot; the $17.9M Nov-20 put is ATM and TRO-confirmed.
- NFLX — short bias, -7.46% post-earnings with put activity surging to $4.0M at 76x V/OI and PCR_v 2.76 (from 0.79).
- SMCI — long bias, +12.22% with $1.7M of 34 Oct-30 calls (6.3x) riding the move.
- IWM — two-sided, 258/261 puts below vs 275/278 calls above; the +1.72% small-cap rally is testing the put wall.

Total unusual put notional: $94.6M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
