Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-18

The Story

Broad risk-off rotation: semis and megacap tech sold (INTC -6.74%, META -4.46%, AMD -4.30%) while defensives and healthcare rallied (JNJ +3.25%, LLY +3.51%, KO +2.12%, XOM +2.53%). Yesterday's bearish conviction bets paid off 8-for-10; the bullish bets failed 6-for-10. The big shift today is IWM: unusual put notional jumped to $88.2M from $3.1M yesterday, with PCR_v at 7.01. Index-level put flow is heavy across the board — SPY $103.1M, QQQ $82.5M, IWM $88.2M. The largest single-name bullish flow is CVX, with $116M+ in call notional across three strikes.

Bearish Bets to Watch

AMD (score 62) — $12.1M puts across 23 contracts. 303x V/OI on the 530 Aug26 strike ($1.46M) and 140x on 488 Aug28 ($3.47M). Spot fell 4.30% today to $484.45, validating yesterday's bearish bet; no TRO confirmation yet.

IWM (score 61) — $88.2M puts, up from $3.1M yesterday. 27.8x V/OI on the 293 Sep18 strike ($20.1M) and 5.7x on 288 ($23.6M). Spot -1.23% to $300.28; PCR_v 7.01 is the most defensive reading in the index complex.

META (score 52) — $32.8M puts, up from $4.9M yesterday. $18.8M at the 555 Sep18 strike (5.4x V/OI), plus 218x on 545 Oct2. TRO confirmed ✅; spot -4.46% to $543.60 and yesterday's bearish bet was right.

TSLA (score 55) — $7.8M puts across 18 contracts. 38.4x V/OI on the 310 Oct2 strike and 20.2x on 335 Aug26. Spot -0.71% to $336.89; yesterday's bearish bet was right, no TRO confirmation.

QQQ (score 44) — $82.5M puts across 16 strikes. 21.8x V/OI on the 640 Oct30 strike ($5.3M) and 17.5x on 718 Aug28. Spot -1.67% to $717.18; yesterday's bearish bet was right, but call flow is nearly as large (see below).

Bullish Bets to Watch

QQQ (score 57) — $91.9M calls, TRO confirmed ✅. 45.8x V/OI on the 711 Sep4 strike ($8.4M) and 9.6x on 719 Sep18 ($21.9M). Two-sided tape: $82.5M puts vs $91.9M calls.

MSFT (score 52) — $3.4M calls, TRO confirmed ✅, 136x V/OI across 4 strikes. Spot +0.24% to $481.82, the only megacap green today; yesterday's bullish bet was flat.

AMD (score 48) — $9.2M calls, TRO confirmed ✅. Two-sided: $12.1M puts vs $9.2M calls, with spot -4.30% to $484.45.

TSLA (score 48) — $16.0M calls, 17x V/OI. Spot -0.71% to $336.89; no TRO confirmation.

CVX — not in the top-20 conviction table, but the largest call prints of the day: $64.4M at 175 Sep18, $34.4M at 180, $17.2M at 185. Spot +1.47% to $205.70; an energy rotation bet.

The Oracle Read

The tape is defensive: combined index put flow ($273.8M across SPY, QQQ, IWM) outweighs index call flow ($150.6M), and IWM's 7.01 PCR_v is the standout. Strongest bearish setups are AMD (score 62, momentum down, no TRO yet) and IWM (score 61, fresh $88.2M put block). Strongest bullish setup is QQQ (score 57, TRO confirmed) plus the CVX energy call block — watch whether small-cap weakness drags QQQ or the CVX bid holds.

Total unusual put notional: $117.0M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
