Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-25

The Story

The market bounced: SPY +0.29% to 765.85 and QQQ +0.63% to 710.73, led by semis and crypto (AMD +4.86%, SMCI +9.43%, HOOD +8.14%, COIN +4.40%). Yesterday's bearish conviction bets mostly failed — META, QQQ, NVDA, and ORCL all rose; only ADBE (-0.85%) and COST (-1.19%) puts paid. The big shift today is TSLA: it is the top bearish conviction ($11.2M puts, score 61) while also carrying $23.4M in calls, a two-sided tape at $350. INTU fell 13.66% (worst mover) and TGT -3.82% with fresh puts. Index put flow stays heavy — SPY $28.5M and QQQ $20.9M, both flagged caution/defensive.

Bearish Bets to Watch

TSLA (score 61) — $11.2M puts across 16 contracts, 25x V/OI, 3-strike cluster at 350/352. Spot $350.24, +0.37% today; the 350 Sep-2 puts printed 24.9x V/OI ($1.99M). No TRO confirmation, and yesterday's TSLA put bet was flat (+0.37%).

MA (score 53) — $1.5M puts, 70x V/OI, 3 strikes. Key print: 620 Nov-20 puts at 69.8x V/OI ($1.03M), 3.5% OTM. Spot $599.26, +11.26% over 25 days and near highs; no TRO confirmation.

META (score 49) — $1.9M puts, 52x V/OI, 4 strikes, TRO confirmed. Puts cluster at 630–640 (10–12% OTM), a fade of the bounce. Spot +1.96% today, and yesterday's META put bet was wrong.

QQQ + SPY (score 40 each) — index hedges, not directional conviction. QQQ $20.9M puts (386x V/OI, 8 strikes) led by 742 Sep-4 ($4.52M); SPY $28.5M puts (45x, 9 strikes) led by 754 Sep-30 ($6.30M) and 726 Sep-18 ($5.29M). Both rose today, so yesterday's index put bets were wrong.

Bullish Bets to Watch

META (score 49) — $13.0M calls, 138x V/OI, 5 strikes. Spot +1.96% today and yesterday's call bet was right. 565 Sep-18 calls printed $5.0M.

TSLA (score 44) — $23.4M calls, 80x V/OI, 3 strikes. 355 Sep-25 calls $4.0M. Same name as the top put conviction — the tape is split on direction.

NVDA (score 37) — $52.8M calls, 304x V/OI, 2 strikes, the largest single-name call notional. 200 Sep-4 ($7.9M) and 210 Sep-4 ($6.9M) calls. Spot +2.15% to $212.96, but $12.7M in puts sits at 215/218.

MSFT (score 43) — $4.1M calls, 40x V/OI, TRO confirmed. Deep ITM 428 Sep-4 calls at 40.2x V/OI ($1.55M). Spot +0.87% to $491.55, +23.26% over 26 days.

AMD (score 38) — $9.8M calls, 34x V/OI, 4 strikes, TRO confirmed. Spot +4.86% to $479.06, the strongest large-cap semi move today.

The Oracle Read

The index tape is two-sided: heavy put flow (SPY $28.5M, QQQ $20.9M) against a market that just bounced, so the puts read as hedges rather than conviction. The strongest directional setups are TSLA puts (score 61, 3-strike cluster at 350/352) and META calls (TRO-confirmed, +1.96% today). Semis are the momentum pocket — AMD +4.86% with TRO-confirmed calls and NVDA $52.8M calls — but NVDA's $12.7M puts at 215/218 mark the line to hold.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • TSLA — two-sided; 350/352 put cluster vs 355 calls; 350 is the line.
  • NVDA — $52.8M calls vs $12.7M puts; 215/218 puts, 200/210 calls; +2.15% today.
  • AMD — TRO-confirmed calls, +4.86%; momentum continuation.
  • INTU — -13.66% on earnings with TRO-confirmed calls (score 31); watch for a bounce or continued unwind.
  • TGT — -3.82% with $3.1M puts at 165; 165 is the level.

Total unusual put notional: $86.3M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
