Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-31
The Story
Broad down day: SPY closed -0.31% at 766.87 but breadth was negative, with 60+ tracked names lower and only energy, crypto, and a few semis green. The tape rotated into energy (XOM +2.75%, CVX +2.18%) and crypto (COIN +5.32%, MSTR +4.62%, IBIT +1.85%), plus TSLA +5.67%. Index put buying stayed heavy and defensive — SPY PCR 1.76, QQQ 1.26, IWM 3.37, with $55.0M in unusual SPY puts. Yesterday's bets split: bearish MSFT, IWM, GS, and META paid off, but the bullish book mostly failed (BLK, LLY, UNP, AAPL all closed lower). The one big shift is $142.2M in GS calls (vs $2.3M yesterday) and $24.9M in LMT calls — both deep in-the-money, which reads as positioning rather than a directional bet.
Bearish Bets to Watch
ADBE (score 66) — $7.4M puts across 17 contracts, led by 2,141 contracts at the 288 strike (76.5x V/OI, $2.62M). Spot is +29.1% over 29 days and +0.41% today at 292.75, so this is a fade-the-run bet. No TRO confirmation; PCR jumped to 2.99, the highest in the book.
IWM (score 63) — $20.2M puts across 33 contracts, 432x V/OI, 6 strikes clustered at 279–282 (Oct 16). Small caps closed -0.59% at 293.99 and PCR sits at 3.37. No TRO; yesterday's IWM put bet was right.
SPY (score 57) — $55.0M puts across 88 contracts, 446x V/OI, 16 strikes. The largest single print is $15.5M at the 775 strike (Sep 30, -1.1% OTM). No TRO; yesterday's SPY put bet was flat.
CRM (score 54) — $9.2M puts, led by 1,608 contracts at the 260 strike (26.4x V/OI, $3.05M, Nov 20). Spot is +51.1% over 29 days after the +22.57% earnings gap on 8/27, and +0.63% today at 257.63. No TRO; yesterday's CRM put bet was wrong.
TSLA (score 51) — $26.5M puts at 774x V/OI, 3 strikes, while spot ripped +5.67% to 367.92. This is a direct fade-the-pop bet against the day's biggest gainer. No TRO.
Bullish Bets to Watch
ORCL (score 66) — $7.3M calls across 17 contracts, led by 5,660 contracts at the 160 strike (51.5x V/OI, $4.44M, Oct 2). Spot closed -0.99% at 149.12, so the calls are 7.3% OTM. No TRO; the same name also carries a bearish score of 30, so the book is split.
GS (score 47) — $142.2M calls, the day's largest bullish notional, concentrated in deep ITM 875–900 strikes (Sep 18) at 6.8–7.4x V/OI. Spot -0.70% at 1026.13. The size and ITM structure point to a roll or position adjustment, not a fresh directional bet.
LMT (score 48) — $24.9M calls, all deep ITM 480–515 strikes (Sep 18), up from $0.1M yesterday. Spot -0.48% at 561.25. Same read as GS: defensive positioning, not a momentum bet.
MSFT (score 43) — $35.8M calls at 168x V/OI, 5 strikes, with TRO confirmation ✅. But the name also carries a bearish score of 45 ($6.6M puts), so the tape is two-sided. Spot -1.31% at 506.95; yesterday's MSFT put bet was right.
AAPL (score 44) — $12.5M calls at 124x V/OI, 3 strikes, TRO ✅. Spot -0.87% at 317.14. Yesterday's AAPL call bet was wrong.
The Oracle Read
Index hedges dominate the tape — SPY, QQQ, and IWM are all defensive, which says the smart money is buying downside protection into a market that closed mixed. The strongest single-name directional setups are ADBE to the downside (highest score, PCR 2.99, fade-the-run) and ORCL to the upside (score 66, 51.5x on the 160 calls). GS and LMT call blocks are positioning, not signals — ignore them for direction.
Names to Watch at the Open
- ADBE — short bias; 288 put wall, PCR 2.99, fade the +29% run.
- TSLA — short bias; $26.5M puts at 774x V/OI against the +5.67% pop.
- ORCL — long bias; 160 Oct calls at 51.5x V/OI, needs a move through 160.
- IWM — short bias; PCR 3.37, put cluster at 279–282.
- GS — watch 900; $142M deep ITM calls, but treat as positioning not direction.

Total unusual put notional: $134.4M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
