Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-28

The Story

Rotation day: mega-cap tech and financials rallied (AMZN +4.00%, MSFT +1.72%, WFC +2.01%) while small caps, semis, and crypto sold off (IWM -1.38%, NVDA -4.66%, PYPL -12.68%, MSTR -7.69%). Yesterday's bearish puts hit on IWM, NVDA, TSLA, and GS but missed on CRM, MSFT, AAPL, and ADBE; bullish calls hit on CRM, AMZN, and AAPL but missed on IWM, CAT, AVGO, and ORCL. The big shift is AMD: put flow jumped to $17.3M (score 72, top conviction) with PCR at 2.92, up from 1.09 yesterday. Index ETFs are uniformly defensive — SPY, QQQ, and IWM all show heavy put buying.

Bearish Bets to Watch

AMD (score 72) — $17.3M puts across 14 contracts, 75x V/OI, 2-strike cluster. $11.3M at the 410 strike (10/02, 74.5x) and $3.4M at 435 (9/18, 41.8x). Spot is -14.25% over 28 days and PCR spiked to 2.92; no TRO confirmation.

IWM (score 65) — $33.1M puts, 433x V/OI, 4 strikes. $17.4M at the 290 strike (9/11, 34.8x) with spot at 295.73. Yesterday's IWM put bet was right (-1.38%); PCR_v sits at 6.67.

SPY (score 64) — $56.2M puts, 106x V/OI, 15 strikes. $16.5M at the 761 strike (9/30, 106.1x). Yesterday was flat (-0.20%), so this is fresh positioning, not validation.

QQQ (score 56) — $34.5M puts, 180x V/OI, 6 strikes. $8.0M at 687 and $6.6M at 681 (both 9/30, 62.3x and 88.1x). Yesterday flat (-0.41%).

MSFT (score 56) — $14.1M puts, 195x V/OI, 3 strikes. $5.6M at the 520 strike (9/18, 13.4x). Yesterday's MSFT put bet was wrong (+1.72%) and spot is +28.81% over 28 days — a fade attempt against a strong uptrend.

Bullish Bets to Watch

NEE (score 57) — $11.6M calls, 2401x V/OI, 1 strike. $8.6M at the 75 strike (9/18, 2401x) and $2.3M at 72 (600x). Spot is -6.96% over 28 days and -1.98% today; no TRO confirmation, so this is a contrarian dip buy.

AMZN (score 41) — $52.7M calls, 19x V/OI, 2 strikes. $41.4M at the 295 strike (11/20, 14.8x). Yesterday's AMZN call bet was right (+4.00%), the largest single bullish print on the tape.

UNP (score 47) — $24.9M calls, 4x V/OI, 2 strikes. $23.2M at the 270 strike (9/18, 4.1x). TRO confirmed; spot +4.38% over 28 days.

BLK (score 48) — $3.7M calls, 154x V/OI, 1 strike. $3.3M at the 1300 strike (11/20, 153.8x). TRO confirmed.

MSFT (score 40) — $22.6M calls, 139x V/OI, 2 strikes. $13.6M at the 545 strike (10/16, 8.3x). TRO confirmed and yesterday's call bet was right; MSFT is two-sided, with calls outnotionaling puts $22.6M to $14.1M.

The Oracle Read

The index tape is defensive (SPY/QQQ/IWM all put-heavy), but single-name conviction is concentrated in AMD puts — the strongest bearish setup on the board. Bullish flow is concentrated in AMZN (Nov 295 calls) and UNP (Sep 270 calls), both with validation or TRO support. Expect the rotation to continue: mega-cap tech and financials bid, small caps and semis under pressure, with AMD the name to watch for downside follow-through.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • AMD — downside; 410/435 puts, spot 465.61 vs 410 strike.
  • IWM — downside; 290 put wall, spot 295.73.

Total unusual put notional: $137.1M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
