Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-01

The Story

Broad risk-off tape: SPY -0.62%, QQQ -1.25%, IWM -1.16%, with technology and consumer discretionary leading down while health care, energy, and staples caught bids. Yesterday's bearish conviction bets were right on 9 of 10 names (ADBE, IWM, SPY, AMZN, TSLA, QQQ, MSFT, AMD, NVDA all fell); yesterday's bullish bets were wrong on 7 of 10, led by ORCL -5.33% and LMT -2.99%. The big shift today is index-level put buying: QQQ $151.6M, SPY $138.5M, IWM $80.8M in unusual puts, all flagged defensive. Single-name bearish flow is led by AVGO (score 57) and AAPL (score 55, $26.0M puts after a +2.56% pop). The strongest bullish signal is DE (score 76, TRO-confirmed), which rose +3.16% today.

Bearish Bets to Watch

AVGO (score 57) — $5.9M puts across 16 contracts, 3-strike cluster, max 86x V/OI. Spot $369.71, -0.14% today, -4.20% over 30 days. Key line: 370/365 puts 9/11 plus 358 9/9 at 86.5x. No TRO confirmation.

AAPL (score 55) — $26.0M puts across 41 contracts, 8 with V/OI > 20x, max 164x. Spot $325.25, +2.56% today — this is a fade-the-pop bet. Key line: 320 10/16 $8.76M, 335 9/11 at 41.4x, 325 9/11 at 42.4x. No TRO; yesterday's bullish call bet on AAPL was right (+2.56%) but today's flow bets it was the top.

UNH (score 52) — $5.1M puts across 5 contracts, max 20x V/OI. Spot $396.37, +1.75% today on the defensive bid. Key line: 390 11/20 $3.05M and 340 11/20 $0.99M. No TRO — this is a bet against the health-care rally.

TSLA (score 47) — $33.0M puts across 49 contracts, 10 with V/OI > 20x, max 123x. Spot $356.08, -3.22% today. Key line: 365/355/350/358 cluster, 350 9/9 at 26.0x, 358 9/9 at 123.1x. No TRO; yesterday's bearish bet was right (-3.22%).

Index puts (grouped) — IWM (score 47, $80.8M, 285x max, 6 strikes), QQQ (score 47, $151.6M, 148x max, 12 strikes), SPY (score 41, $138.5M, 1255x max, 9 strikes). All three flagged defensive with PCR_v of 11.70, 1.69, and 1.75. Largest prints: QQQ 690 9/25 $42.6M, IWM 285 9/11 $27.7M, SPY 725 10/16 $27.4M.

Bullish Bets to Watch

DE (score 76, TRO ✅) — $6.0M calls across 9 contracts, 3 with V/OI > 20x, max 211x. Spot $676.14, +3.16% today, +14.57% over 30 days. Key line: 665 9/11 at 210.7x ($2.70M) and 670 9/11 at 42.7x ($2.36M). TRO confirmed — the strongest directional setup on the tape.

CAT (score 64) — $6.8M calls across 14 contracts, 2 with V/OI > 20x, max 23x. Spot $779.10, -2.34% today, -12.54% over 30 days. Key line: 740 11/20 at 22.8x ($4.18M). No TRO, and note CAT also carries a TRO-confirmed bearish signal (score 37) — two-sided flow.

SPY (score 60) — $133.4M calls across 168 contracts, 39 with V/OI > 20x, max 800x. Spot $762.15. Key line: 762 9/11 at 41.6x ($9.80M), 763 9/9 at 151.7x. This is two-sided against $138.5M in SPY puts — index flow is hedging, not directional.

AMD (score 58) — $12.9M calls across 38 contracts, 8 with V/OI > 20x, max 209x. Spot $459.74, -2.32% today, -15.33% over 30 days. Key line: 452 9/18 at 70.7x ($2.39M), 460 9/9 at 209x. No TRO; AMD also shows bearish flow (score 33).

GS (score 45) — $108.5M calls, 5-strike cluster, all deep ITM: 880/875/885 9/18 at -12% OTM. Largest prints $22.8M, $17.0M, $12.5M. This reads as positioning or a roll, not a clean directional bet — treat with caution.

The Oracle Read

The tape is defensive at the index level: QQQ, SPY, and IWM all show put-heavy flow with PCR_v of 1.69, 1.75, and 11.70. The strongest single-name setups are DE long (TRO-confirmed, score 76) and AAPL fade (score 55, $26.0M puts after a +2.56% pop). Expect continued pressure on tech and small caps and a continued bid in health care, energy, and staples unless the index put flow reverses.

  • AVGO short — $369.71, puts at 370/365, 86x max.
  • IWM short — $290.57, puts at 285/275, $80.8M.

Total unusual put notional: $162.0M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
