Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-19

The Story

The tape split in two: semis and industrials sold off (AVGO -4.61%, AMD -3.76%, GE -5.04%) while nearly everything else rallied, led by MRK +12.59%, MSTR +12.53%, COIN +9.70%, and TSLA +4.24%. Yesterday's bearish bets mostly failed — TSLA, MSFT, AAPL, and INTU all rose — while the bullish side paid (MSFT, HD, TSLA, AMZN, AAPL all up). Today's flow is defensive: $124.0M in unusual put notional with SPY PCR_v at 1.81 and IWM at 1.99. QQQ is the battleground, holding $125.5M in unusual calls (score 76, TRO confirmed) against $87.4M in unusual puts (score 56). WMT carries the single largest put print: $23.7M at 10,492x V/OI on the 125 strike.

Bearish Bets to Watch

AVGO (score 67) — $11.9M in unusual puts across 26 contracts. The 355 Aug-31 put is $7.5M at 2,851x V/OI, 2.1% OTM. Spot fell 4.61% to $362.44, a third straight down day; no TRO confirmation.

WMT (score 66) — $25.2M in unusual puts, dominated by one 125 Sep-4 put at $23.7M and 10,492x V/OI, 9.3% ITM. Spot is $114.40, down 0.69%. No TRO, and the same name also carries $9.2M in calls (score 71) — a two-way bet.

AMD (score 57) — $6.0M in unusual puts, with the 465 Aug-31 put at $1.5M and 307x V/OI, 0.3% OTM. Spot fell 3.76% to $466.23 and is down 14.14% over 21 days. No TRO, but yesterday's bearish bet was right (-3.76%).

QQQ (score 56) — $87.4M in unusual puts across 69 contracts and 11 strikes. The 705 Sep-11 put is $29.3M at 25x V/OI, 1.6% OTM. Spot was flat at $716.49; no TRO, and the call side is larger.

NFLX (score 54) — $2.2M in unusual puts, with the 81 Aug-28 put at 64x V/OI. Spot rose 3.11% to $80.23 and is up 18.85% over 21 days. No TRO; this is a bet against an intact uptrend.

Bullish Bets to Watch

QQQ (score 76) — $125.5M in unusual calls across 16 strikes, TRO confirmed. The 717 Sep-18 call is $45.2M at 96.1x V/OI, 0.1% OTM. Spot is $716.49; the call book is the strongest conviction signal on the tape.

WMT (score 71) — $9.2M in unusual calls, with the 117 Sep-11 call at $6.9M and 284x V/OI, 2.3% OTM. Spot is $114.40. No TRO; the same name holds the day's biggest put, so the two sides are fighting.

IWM (score 56) — $11.5M in unusual calls, TRO confirmed. The 276 Sep-18 call is $3.65M at 114.9x V/OI, 8.5% ITM. Spot rose 0.44% to $301.60.

AMD (score 55) — $24.3M in unusual calls, TRO confirmed. The 470 Aug-28 call is $5.7M at 20.9x V/OI, 0.8% OTM. Spot fell 3.76% to $466.23, but call notional is 4x the put notional.

TSLA (score 53) — $73.2M in unusual calls. The 345 Sep-11 call is $27.9M at 17.9x V/OI, 1.8% ITM. Spot rose 4.24% to $351.16; no TRO, but yesterday's bullish bet was right (+4.24%).

The Oracle Read

The tape is two-sided: heavy put buying in AVGO, WMT, QQQ, and SPY sits against heavy call buying in QQQ, IWM, AMD, and TSLA, with QQQ the clearest battleground. TRO confirmation lands entirely on the bullish side (QQQ, IWM, AMD, SPY, MSFT, NVDA, LLY, MRK, CVX, BKNG, C, MDT) while no bearish name is confirmed. The strongest setups are QQQ calls (score 76, TRO), the WMT two-way (10,492x put vs 284x call), and AVGO puts after a three-day slide.

Total unusual put notional: $124.0M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
