Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-03

The Story

Broad risk-on rally: SPY +0.94% to 772.39, QQQ +1.09% to 717.22, IWM +0.34% to 295.07. Crypto and fintech led — MSTR +17.59%, HOOD +15.29%, COIN +9.60%, PLTR +7.38%. Yesterday's bearish puts were wrong almost across the board (SPY, META, TSLA, GS, MSFT, QQQ all rose), while bullish calls paid (GS +3.26%, TSLA +6.13%, ADBE +2.16%). Today's shift is defensive: $282.3M in unusual puts, $141.4M of it in SPY alone, bought into strength. MCD is the standout single-name bear with $61.1M in puts and TRO confirmation.

Bearish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 67) — $28.6M puts, 61x V/OI, concentrated in 281/288 Oct 16 strikes. Spot $295.07, +0.34% today, still inside a 32-day range of 288.63–304.90. No TRO confirmation; the bet is small caps roll over from the top of that range.

CRM (score 58) — $5.5M puts, 63x V/OI, 265 strike cluster across Sep/Oct. Spot $264.42, +2.93% today and +55.06% over 32 days. No TRO; puts are a fade of the post-earnings run.

TSLA (score 54) — $79.8M puts, 589x V/OI, 375/380 Sep 11 strikes. Spot $377.47, +6.13% today. No TRO; $78.3M in calls on the other side makes this a two-way battleground.

META (score 49) — $12.9M puts, 126x V/OI, 615 strike. Spot $610.68, +2.74% today. No TRO; yesterday's bearish bet was wrong and today's doubles down.

SPY (score 47) / QQQ (score 41) — $141.4M and $47.8M in puts, 242x and 634x V/OI, Oct 16 732–760 (SPY) and Sep 11 740 (QQQ). Both rose today. No TRO; this is index-level hedging, not a directional collapse bet.

Bullish Bets to Watch

GS (score 72) — $24.3M calls, 350x V/OI, deep ITM 895–925 Sep 18 strikes. Spot $1037.36, +3.26% today. Yesterday's GS call bet (score 83) was right; today's adds more at the same strikes.

QQQ (score 67) — $59.7M calls, 394x V/OI, Nov 30 712–718 strikes. Spot $717.22, +1.09% today. No TRO; calls are positioned for continued tech strength into year-end.

COST (score 60) — $5.3M calls, 24x V/OI, 920–925 strikes. Spot $925.24, -0.30% today. No TRO; the bet is a bounce off the 32-day low of 925.24.

AMD (score 56) — $24.5M calls, 451x V/OI, 458/462 Sep 11 strikes. Spot $456.24, -0.06% today and -15.98% over 32 days. No TRO; calls bet a rebound from the bottom of a 424.68–555.20 range.

ADBE (score 56, TRO ✅) — $5.2M calls, 47x V/OI, 295 Oct strikes. Spot $285.75, +2.16% today. TRO confirmed; yesterday's call bet was right and today's extends it.

The Oracle Read

The tape is hedging, not chasing: $282.3M in unusual puts concentrated in SPY/QQQ/IWM while spot made new highs. Strongest directional setups are GS deep-ITM calls (score 72) and MCD puts (TRO confirmed, $61.1M). TSLA is the battleground — $79.8M puts vs $78.3M calls at 375/380 — expect a sharp move either way.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • MCD — downside; 290/295 Sep 18 puts, TRO confirmed, $61.1M total.
  • GS — upside; 895–925 Sep 18 calls, score 72, $24.3M.
  • TSLA — two-way; 375/380 Sep 11, $79.8M puts vs $78.3M calls.

Total unusual put notional: $282.3M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
